When the Citizen United verdict came out, we all knew it was only a matter of time before some large corporation would take advantage of it in a gratuitous way. I was assuming the first big offender would be one of the large corporations that do not deal directly with the public for the bulk of their business, like ADM, ConAgra, or Monsanto. I was shocked when it turned out to be a retailer with as diverse of a customer base as Target.
Target made the news when it donated $150,000 to the group Minnesota Forward, a newly created organization that has yet to do anything other than create and place commercials supporting Tom Emmer's campaign for Minnesota Governor.
As is often the case, timing is everything. The news of Target's political gift happend to hit the news the same day they announced here in Seattle that they were finally opening a store in downtown Seattle. That ended up creating the sort of local attention to their actions in another state that they probably were not expecting, and got a group of Seattle area political activists thinking.
