With Hurricane Irene dominating the news as it is, those of us here in Manhattan are getting ready. There was only one coffee shop opened this and while I was reading this morning’s Daily News, I started wondering when the last direct hit here was.
Now I remember when I was a little kid, my grandmother talking about a hurricane beginning with “D” in the early ‘60s, and I remember all the hype surrounding Hurricane Belle in 1976, But I’m not sure if “D’s”, which Wikipedia identifies as Donna, eye hit New York city, but the edges did, and since then the city has been clipped several times, most notably by Hurricane Floyd in 1999. The last tropical storm to hit was Barry in 2007. I remember that one rather well.
But getting back to direct hits by the eye of a hurricane. When was the last one?
According to Wikipedia, it was 1821. EIGHTEEN TWENTY ONE! Apparently, the eye’s not going to hit us this time, but it’s going to be close enough to get nearly the full force of the monster to slam us. Stay safe.
