Hello my fellow Kossacks! I'm here at the Oregon Convention Center with the Merkley Campaign, the Obama Campaign and the Democratic Party of Oregon. This election year has been nothing short of amazing. The results are in and Barack Obama will be sworn in as the 44th President of the United States of America. Now that we will have a new President in January, it's up to the Senate to make sure his agenda for change moves forward. I've been working for Jeff Merkley for the last five months and have been an ardent supporter for a long time. Now, we're just minutes away from the results to begin trickling in....

The last eight years with the Bush Administration in power has been a disaster for our country. Our nation is mired in war in Iraq, thousands of soldiers have lost their lives, and thousands more are injured. Our economy is struggling and we've accumulated the largest national deficit and debt in the history our nation. We've failed to seriously invest in alternative forms of energy and create jobs here at home. Our moral standing in the world has been damaged by the use of torture and the abandonment of International treaties like the Geneva Convention. The unemployment rate is over 6% nationally, wages are stagnant and the American workweek is shortening. We've all felt powerless while Bush vetoed bills to provide health care for our children and while Republicans in Congress blocked efforts to strengthen workers' rights. Even when the Democrats took control of Congress back in 2006, our slim majority was not enough to overcome 94 filibusters by the Republicans, who were more interested in playing partisan games than moving our nation forward. We need to elect Barack Obama and strengthen our majorities in Congress if we want to see real change.

Oregon Senate candidate Jeff Merkley jumped into the Senate race back in August of 2007. The outpouring of support for Jeff has been nothing short of amazing. Oregon Democratic leaders like former Governor Barbara Roberts, Senator Ron Wyden, Representative Earl Blumenauer, and Representative Peter Defazio have been incredibly hardworking campaigners for Merkley. That's not all, Democratic leaders from all across the country have been doing what they can to send Merkley, an accomplished progressive legislator, to the U.S. Senate. With just five days left until election day, I want to pay homage to all the great Democrats who have given energy to our campaign to put this nation back on track....

I'm a bit out of breath because I just ran around the entire office delivering the great news that a new SUSA poll shows Merkley ahead by 7 points!!! Check out the video....

The poll shows that Merkley does have the momentum in the race for Oregon Senate, but it also means that Jeff Merkley will become even more of a target for the rightwing attack machine. Karl Rove and his buddies will stop at nothing to keep Gordon Smith in power.

Al Gore is coming out to Oregon to do his part to help send Oregon Senate candidate Jeff Merkley to the Senate. Al Gore has been the leading voice in the fight against climate change. By raising awareness on climate change, he helped change hearts and minds of even the most stubborn Republican politicians. Even with Gore's work bringing climate change to the forefront in American politics, that does not mean Republicans will take serious steps to address the crisis. That's why it's no surprise, Al Gore has decided to come all the way out to Oregon to help Jeff Merkley defeat Republican Gordon Smith.

With just eight days until ballots drop in Oregon, the time is NOW to come together and oust Republican Gordon Smith and replace him with progressive Democrat Jeff Merkley. Tonight is the first of two scheduled debates between Merkley and Smith. Merkley challenged Smith to eight debates, but of course, Gordon Smith only agreed to two. Before the debate began, there was a HUGE rally outside the KGW studio in Portland, Oregon. Follow me below the fold....

Progressive Democrat Jeff Merkley is in a dead heat with Republican Gordon Smith in the race for Oregon Senate. According to polls, the Oregon race is currently the closest race in the country. Considering our desperate need for more strong-willed progressive Democrats in the Senate, it's no wonder Senator Russ Feingold is traveling all the way to Oregon to stump for Jeff Merkley. Tonight, Oregon Senate candidate Jeff Merkley weighed in on the recent passage of the Paulson bailout proposal. When Paulson first proposed his three page bill, Jeff came out forcefully against it. When Democrats and Republicans went back to the drawing board and dressed it up, Merkley opposed it because it didn't go far enough to protect homeowners and the American taxpayer. And, when the Senate decided to add tax cuts and other provisions to dress it up, Merkley stood strong in his opposition to what he believes is a bad bill.
