Frugal Fridays: Travel Tips

by sarahnity

Summer is almost here and for many people that means it's time to start planning the family vacation.  If you are looking for some tips on how to cut costs on the road, look no further.  (Well, look a little further, head down below.)

One quick tip to whet your appetite: If you live in or intend to visit Florida, there's still a brief window of opportunity for a great deal on rental cars.  Alamo is renting cars for $10 a day, as long as you pick up the car in Florida before May 31 and return it in another state.

Before we get to the fun stuff, a brief administrative note: As you may have noticed, I've been rather remiss in writing this series lately.  If anyone would like to volunteer to write a guest column, please email me at frugalfridays (at) gmail.com.  Also, if you'd like to receive an email announcement whenever a new diary is posted, send me mail and ask to be put on the announcement list.

I've been keeping and posting a list of books by Kossacks for a couple years now.  It has grown so large I needed to split it into two parts to stay within the diary length limits.  To be included on the list below, the authors had to meet the following criteria:

  • active kossacks: the author must be a registered user who must have posted a comment or diary within the past six months (or so)
  • books in print: the book must be currently in print and available from a retailer
  • no self published works: sometimes it is hard for me to determine which books are self-published, but I've made my best effort

The most recent version of the second part of the list, with all the out-of-print books and self-published books and books by former kossacks and books by relatives of kossacks can be found here.

Special shoutout to the new addition to the list: Rachel Vogelsang.

I've finally broken through the writer's block that has been shutting me down for a few weeks, so I thought it would be a good time to turn to a discussion of credit and debit cards.  In the past I have never been shy about expressing my opinion that credit cards are vastly superior to debit cards.  However, to be fair, this is not always the case for every person.  Depending on how and where you use your cards, debit cards can have some advantages.  Follow me down for a detailed examination of which card is better and why.

I've been keeping and posting a list of books by Kossacks for a couple years now.  It has grown so large I needed to split it into 2 parts to stay within the diary length limits.  Last night I posted the list of books currently in print by current kossacks and today I am posting the rest of the list.

I am still trying to get everyone categorized properly so let me know if I've made any mistakes.

If you know of any any authors who I am missing for either list, respond in the comments or send me email.  Please be sure to let me know whether you would like your dkos ID included or if you would prefer to be added anonymously.  Keep in mind that I won't include any author who hasn't contacted me personally or outed himself on this site.   Some authors do not want to be included on this list and I will respect their wishes.

Update [2010-4-14 13:8:27 by sarahnity]: Shoutout to a new addition to the list: Martha Ture.

I've run into length limitations in posting the entire list to a single diary, so I have split this list into two parts.

If you are an author (or you know an author) who I made a mistake in categorizing, please let me know and I'll change it and know that any mistakes or omissions weren't  done in malice but rather in ignorance.

The second part of the list, with all the out-of-print books and self-published books and books by former kossacks and books by relatives of kossacks will be published soon  is now up.

Frugal Fridays: Finances and Divorce

by sarahnity

Disagreements over family finances is one of the leading causes of divorce in the United States, but no matter what the cause of a breakup, divorce can be a very financially costly event for all parties involved.  Unfortunately, divorce by its very nature is not something people can approach calmly or dispassionately and it is hard to keep your financial head when you are in the midst of such an emotional upheaval.  If you are in the midst of a divorce, or heading towards one soon, perhaps some of the tips and hints below may be helpful.

Before we get to the good stuff, I have an administrative note: I recently revamped the mailing list for announcing these diaries.  If you want to get an email announcement each week when a new diary is posted, send me email: frugalfridays (at) gmail.com and I'll add you to the list.  If you didn't get an email this week, you are not on the current list.

Books by Kossacks

by sarahnity

Oh boy.  It's been almost two months since I posted this and I have a lot of new additions.  The list has gotten so long, it exceeds the allowable diary length, so look in the comments for the list of Books by Kossacks Once Removed.

As usual, if you know of any any authors who I am missing, respond in the comments or send me email.  Please be sure to let me know whether you would like your dkos ID included or if you would prefer to be added anonymously.

Don't forget, if you like to talk about books, be sure to check out the weekly diary series  What Are You Reading and Bookflurries.  For writers, check out the new series: Write On!.

Special shoutout to the new additions to the list:  Sally Tyler Hayes, Teresa Hill (who are the same person), Richie Chevat, Sean Brodrick, William H. Calvin, Michael Hager, Amitai Etzioni, and Arthur Waskow.

And one more addition that I am very sad to make.  The late Al Weisel was recently revealed to be Jon Swift.

The 2009 Credit Card Reform Act takes effect next Monday so I thought this would be a great time to review what this means for you.  If you have a credit card now, if you plan to have a credit card in the future, or if you are financially intertwined with someone who has a credit card, follow me down below the fold.  The rest of you are excused, and you can go out and play now.

It's a sad fact that as the economy goes south, the number of scams and cons that are designed to separate you from your dwindling resources increase. Last year I covered some of the common scams I've seen recently, but since then I have heard of a whole slew of new ones, so it is time to put the word out again.
