Like everyone here, I was shattered Tuesday night and Wednesday morning. Sickened and heartbroken. And deeply, deeply ashamed of my country.
Like everyone here, I want to do something to turn that awful energy into healing and progress. And as it happens, a dear friend of mine gave me an opportunity this morning.
Animals are my activism. I have crippling social anxiety and don’t do well with strangers, but my wife and I have been in rescue for nearly thirty years. (We were married in Maryland in 2013 after 25 years together, and I am trying very hard not to think about the future of marriage equality right now.) More than once this community has astonished me with its generosity and openhearted love; so I am coming back to the well.
Wubby, the bunny in the picture above, belongs to a young friend of mine whose fiance is from Ecuador. She is starting school in January to be an X-ray technician; but a few days ago, Wubby was diagnosed with a tooth abscess. Bunnies do not do well with infections, so surgery is necessary to save her life. Nika has posted a GoFundMe to help with the $1500 for the surgery. I’ve shared to Facebook and a few other sites, and chipped in myself; and I thought I would share it here as well.
Other people volunteer on campaigns, and phonebank, and protest in the streets, and canvass neighborhoods. I can’t do that. So I try to save animals. I know some folks here are like me.
God bless you all.
