I have been pondering the emotional reaction I, and many others, seem to have whenever we think of the significance of the Obama election. This little poem tries to explain why. Feel free to forward this on.
All the best, Rick Gordon
I think the intellectual analysis is missing, in some ways, the real significance of Barack's election. Every election ends with a winner, but never have we seen the celebration in the streets like now. It wasn't just Obama winning, it was America winning!
We all know the John McCain we have seen in this presidential campaign is not the McCain he tried to embody 8 years ago when he was more of a Straight Talker and even a bit of a maverick in bucking party orthodoxy. I doubt even he is happy with the kind of negative and divisive campaign he has ran, especially since it hasn’t (fortunately) been effective. I figure he has one chance to try to salvage his integrity on Nov. 4 in a concession speech to bring the nation together. Here is what he could say:
I can't believe no one but Bernie Sanders has proposed taxing the rich to pay for the bailout. But, maybe this is all playing into Obama's hands.
The Republicans are always so good at taking a Democratic candidate's strengths and framing it as a liability. Here are a few ideas for ads from Obama that can liven up our perspective on McCain/Palin. Someone with more video talent than me could post these on youtube. Thanks.
Will the current violence in Iraq be perceived as another Tet Offensive? Just when our government is telling us (once again) that things are looking up and victory is around the corner, the militants are showing that they can strike where and when they want, despite our "surge" and billions spent. This is what happened on the Tet Offensive on the New Year in Vietnam, and even those Americans supporting that war came to turn against the war--will this be the straw to break the proverbial camel's back and sets the American people really against the war and promises of success we are just about to achieve.
Primary Reflections
How McCain courts the Right while we all focus on the Dems. Hillary Momentum??? Sure, if it sells. Barack can't win the big states?
To follow up on the brave speech on race, here's the speech Obama should give next. Let's try to get past the minutia and keep an eye on the big picture. There is a real opportunity for change in tone here, even if the powers that be want to keep us mired in the past. Let's ask less "Where's the Beef?" and look more at the "Bun."
