I was left with a sense of shock and dismay when I heard Trump speak about down playing the severity of SARS-CoV-2 in order to resist “panic.” The revelation did answer the question of why an admitted germaphobe would downplay a pandemic. He was just putting on an act. Something else bothered me, though. My brain took a while to piece it together but it struck me last night. Say what you will about stereotypes of Americans, e.g. loud, fat, self-centered, etc. One stereotype that most agree upon is that our citizens are brave. We have dealt with a lot as a nation both from without and within, but we have always confronted those challenges with bravery. Trump did not trust his fellow citizens enough to handle the truth. He could have laid out the facts and talked about the tough times ahead. We could have rolled up our sleeves and started to do the hard work that was necessary to prevent so many deaths. Instead, he encouraged a nation to start complaining that they couldn’t shop at Kohl’s for a new pair of jeans, have a beer at the local pub, or how poorly Trump has been treated. Trump didn’t trust in the bravery of our citizens, and we are all paying the consequences of that disrespect.
