I live near Philadelphia - I'm putting in a few rows of peas this weekend - I'll report back in a few weeks and let you know how they're doing.

    •  I'm in southwest Nova Scotia. (9+ / 0-)

Driving home through the coastal countryside I saw a flock of seagulls hovering over a field near the road. When I looked closer I saw that the field had just been plowed. The birds were feeding on the worms, larvae and other invertebrates that had been turned up by the plow.

A freshly-plowed field, in Nova Scotia, on Feb. 2. The mind boggles.

Oh, and great to see your work here, Neo, as well as on WU.

      •  WTF? (4+ / 0-)

I'm not that old. I was born in Canada. I lived in southern Quebec (similar climate to Nova Scotia) in a town in the farmland from 1985 to 1989.

I don't think, in those 4 years, there was a single winter where there was less than 2 feet of snow on the ground in February.

Our winters have always been somewhat milder than you got in southern Quebec, partly because we're farther south and partly from the moderating effect of the ocean.

Even so, this winter has been extraordinary here. What very little snow we've had has melted or been washed away within 24 hrs. (That snow-cover map above shows the 1 inch we got yesterday. It's gone now.)

But even more bizarre is that there is no frost in the ground, at all. That's what allowed that person to do the plowing.

    •  Did you overwinter garlic? (0+ / 0-)

I did for the first time last year, had a fabulous crop! Here, both E (lots of freezing) and W WA, they say plant first week of Nov.
