  •  The 2008 Operation Cast Lead led (25+ / 0-)

to the deaths of some 1,400 Palestinians.
9 Israelis were killed from Palestinian activity, 3 from friendly fire.
Already some 46 Palestinians have been killed since Wednesday.
So buckle up. We have many, many more deaths to go before Israel agrees to a ceasefire.

stop firing rockets from behind women and children

      •  Are you defending the bombing of women and kids? (9+ / 0-)

You see the numbers- every time Israel bombs the imprisoned people of Gaza, hundreds if not thousands of Gazans die. They are trapped in Gaza, they cannot leave because Israel won't let them. You know that the Gaza Strip is one of the most densely populated places on the planet. Yet you are able pithily dismiss all these dead human beings (at a ratio of about 150 Gazans to every 1 Israeli).

This combination of simple-mindedness and cruelty is demented. If defenders of Israeli aggression continue to demonstrate this dearth of humanity, this lack of decency, they will win no supporters to their side.

        •  no - all deaths are bad (0+ / 0-)

im just saying civilian deaths would go drastically down if hamas didn't operate from apartment buildings

          •  They would go down even more drastically (11+ / 0-)

if Israel would stop bombing one the most densely populated urban areas on Earth.  Or let people out of Gaza freely. Or generally treat Palestinians as human beings.

          •  What is your opinion of Yishai's statement? (10+ / 0-)

That, after all, is the main topic of this rather short diary.

In about 1,000 hostile and trollish comments you've made here,

somehow you haven't gotten around to directly addressing what Yishai said.

            •  i've already expressed it (1+ / 0-)

that it was an unkind and poorly worded statement.

that all deaths are bad for both sides.

but that i beleive that in the end all israel wants is peace, something it has never had in its existence.

the quote is horrible, gaza should not be bombed back to the stoneage. but, hamas should be punished for firing rockets at civilian centers.

              •  Should Israel also be punished? (4+ / 0-)

They are firing rockets and dropping bombs on civilian centers in Gaza.

If it's wrong for one to do, it is wrong for both.

              •  Israel has peace with Egypt since 1979. (10+ / 0-)

The peace agreement explicitly stipulated a retreat of Israeli armed forces from the West Bank and Gaza in 5 years, and a full Palestinian autonomy there.

At that time, the number of Israeli settlers in West Bank (sans E. Jerusalem) was 10-15k.

But successive Israeli governments have treated this part  of the peace agreement like toilet  paper. Because Sadat was dead, the Palestinians were weak, and the West was cowardly and/or craven.

So now we have 300k settlers including the Foreign Minister, and the Occupation's useful idiots can claim with a straight face, "all Israel wants is peace, but the meanie Arabs never gave it a chance."

Maybe ordinary Israelis want peace. But they have been fed with convenient lies for so long, they won't be able to find the way there.

One thing's for sure: their politicians (save the left fringe) don't want peace. Yishai meant every word he said. He said that in 2006 about Lebanon too.

            •  Yishai is a jack ass... He should be run out of (0+ / 0-)

the Government on a rail (and Deri is coming back). Oh and Yishai should keep his mouth shut, because every time he opens it, he sticks both feet fully in.

That said, Yishai is not the only person in leadership of either side that is saying dumb shit. Hamas is rolling in that as well... What would make this a more effective complaint is if ridiculous memes on both sides were hammered out.

As you know by now, I support Operation Cloud Pillar, I think it is time that Hamas completely cease their firing at Israeli towns in the South PERIOD, nothing short of that is worth dealing with. Nothing. You also know that my Israeli friends (and most Israelis agree with that). I think they are right to demand that. If Hamas wants to play with fire... they are going to get burned.

That said.... Eli Yishai needs to simply not be around in the Israeli polity. He is an embarrassment and a bad, bad joke.

        •  There are 1.7 million people in Gaza. (9+ / 0-)

They are packed into 140 sq. mi.

The population density is about 12,000 people per sq. mi.

Chicago has a population density of about 11,800 per sq. mi., and it covers about 227 sq. mi. of land.

So bombing Gaza is very similar to bombing Chicago, in terms of "fish in a barrel".  The advantage that Israel has is that they have Gaza blockaded by land, sea, and air.  So while the people of Chicago would flee an attack on this scale, the people of Gaza are trapped by Israel in the Gaza Strip.

With a population density that high, the Hamas idiots HAVE to fire their stupid rockets from a populated area or the Israeli snipers would pick them off.  But this also gives Israel the ability to make the "They fire from behind women and children!" claim.  Which is, as is plain to see, a falsehood.  They fire from where they are able to fire.

With that many people packed in like sardines in a can, anyplace they go is going to be a populated area.  Israel knows this.

          •  Then knowing that... They shouldn't fire (0+ / 0-)

Probably it would be best if they simply sat down and said: "We are changing our Charter and we accept the existence of Israel as it was created to be. Period" Let's talk. Tell me, why shouldn't they do that and why aren't they asking for that and why aren't you and other activists asking for that?
