  •  I haven't seen Boehner asking for help (10+ / 0-)

At least not from House Democrats.  It seems relatively obvious that if he wants to get a bill passed through both chambers with the President's signature at the bottom, he is failing to talk to the one group of people that might help him get the job done.  The Tea Partiers won't pass such a bill; Boehner's only hope of being a leader is to piss off his caucus and find enough moderate Republicans to make a deal with House Dems.

Of course, that might cost him the Speaker's post, but it would be the Right Thing to do.

Yes, it would be, absolutely.  Which is why it probably won't happen.

    •  In political novels, situations like these (0+ / 0-)

usually result in the key figure making an out of the box move or form an unlikely alliance. Sadly, today's GOP lacks any imagination outside of beer, pizza and doughnuts.

If Boehner were smart, imaginative and had a sense of doing something for the greater good, he'd talk to 7 or 8 GOP Senators and ask them to support cloture on whatever deal he strikes in the House and that Reid brings up in the Senate.  He would then talk to about 35-40  House members to get their support on whatever deal he strikes with Pelosi and also support in the event of a leadership challenge. In return, he offers them primary committee spots, perks, etc.

He would then offer Pelosi everything she would want in a bill: repeal of Bush tax cuts, closing of loopholes, ending funding for the wars, on the condition that all Democrats would vote for the Boehner-Pelosi bill and support Boehner as Speaker in the event of a leadership challenge. Pelosi also offers DNC group support for any GOPer who votes for the bill in order to fend off teabagger primary challenges  The bill passes.  The Bush tax cuts and the wars end.  Boehner survives the leadership challenge and becomes a uniquely independent Speaker of the House.  Perhaps Dems accede to some discretionary spending cuts in order to get moderate GOP buy in.  The tea party is marginalized and sanity is restored to DC.  Obama is a big winner and Boehner is actually a kind of political hero.
