to resign as PM? Does that mean elections? or would another conservative step-in? or would lib-dem agreement incude a govt led by LD?

Did any lib-dem's meet weekly with Murdoch's vassells?

...it could play out that way. Cameron has done his utmost to distance himself from the NI connections, but who knows what secrets are hidden and about to exposed.

This would not necessarily trigger an election. The Lib Dems could theoretically go into coalition with Labour, supported by the smaller parties. But they'd have a wafer thin majority.

Mind you, if the Tories are sufficiently in disarray after Cameron's demise it still might be the best option for them too.

On your last point: no, the Lib Dems have never really been courted by the Murdoch empire, mainly because they were never expected to have any power. In the brief surge of Cleggmania during the 2010 election campaign, News International was - on the bidding of Coulson and Cameron - transparently attempting to expose and discredit the Lib Dem leader in a moment of panic.

It was the most egregious and shameless example of political bias and media patronage I've seen. No one even tried to conceal it or apologise for it. That's how embedded these unaccountable figures had become in the British system, and how constitutionally reliant the Tories, and to some extent New Labour, were on the Murdochs for support.
