A post based on a tweet. Who ever heard of such a thing!

    •  But the tweet isn't even hers. (0+ / 0-)

I agree with this commenter -- it doesn't seem like too much to ask to post her actual quote, not just commentary on it.

      •  Don't agree with you (0+ / 0-)

Often a post will make reference to a different commentary on an action or statement of a 3rd person.

In this case, it makes reference to a teeted comment about the statement of Andrea Mitchell.

Unless you have reason to doubt Mitchell said it, then I see no basis for your objection.

        •  I just can't agree with that. (0+ / 0-)

You are correct, empirically, that sometimes front-page posts or recommended diaries will be based off nothing more than a third-hand account of something someone said. That doesn't mean I can't try to hold us to higher standards, though, especially because they occasionally turn out to be misquotes.

I do, in fact, have basis for requesting the primary-source material in a high-profile forum like this, that goes beyond simply whether I doubt she said it (and I don't). Blogging is most effective when the information can be amplified in other forums. In my 7 years here, I've used posts as references in everything from my emails and FB posts, to my class lectures, to big-city paper op-eds, to my scholarly writing -- but only if they meet acceptable standards of verification. And this doesn't.

          •  Still disagree (0+ / 0-)

Sometimes links to statements are not available.

I assume when you see a quote in the news paper (or a link to a newspaper) you accept the quote at face value.

In the end, most everything is hearsay in the news business.

You can't apply your standard to mediums that move this quickly.

            •  Fair enough. (0+ / 0-)

(I'll check the quote myself when it hits Lexis-Nexis.) I know it may be asking a bit much of the medium, especially on a day like this when we're essentially live-blogging Washington, rather than doing more deliberate analysis.
