        actual evidence that most people, if presented with politicians who strongly advocated for economic policies that would benefit them, especially during periods of economic distress like the present, would still vote against those politicians for reasons of bigotry or culture wars.

        I think people want more populist measures, but they don't get them from Dems, so they vote Republican as a message to Dems: get with the program or we'll vote you out. It has nothing to do with Republican policies; they don't really think Republicans will enact what they want. But they do expect it to slap the Democrats awake and get back to enacting Democratic policies.

          Most people voting Republican are not doing it to punish Democrats. In fact, I think fewer than 500 people vote Republican as an attempt to punish Democratic candidates.

          If they want to punish them by voting for someone else they would/do vote Socialist or Green
