    You can begin way back before Monteverdi. Of course they were sackbuts...

    Trombones have been used for centuries...since they are the only brass instrument that could play melodic  lines ...the slide..get it? trumpets, french horns had no valves

    All of the great composers used trombones extensively to back all choral works so the chorus would have something to follow.
    The trombones throughout history have been used ...as a supreme backdrop of the most sacred order. Even if you listen to the music on "Iron Chef America"...what do you hear in the background as a symbol of strength, power and beauty leading up to  the grandest moments? Yup....posaune.
    Zen..check your scores of all Schubert, Mozart choral works... trombones. Alto, tenor and bass.
    And, don't forget in the Mozart Requiem, the tenor trombone has the grand solos in the Tuba Mirum....in fact begins the segment with the opening statement..and the soloist follows.

    Dropping out is not an option!
