HVDC is 2 conductor, HVAC is 3 and a neutral, call it 4. SO if one was to hang HVDC on a AC tower, it would fit.

The lines on a tower are designed so that you don't get arc over between the different phases (AC power is typically generated and transmitted in three phases) and the neutral (or ground).  The same would apply to the HVDC lines too.  So, so long as the necessary distance were maintained between all of the circuits, one could put both HVAC and HVDC on the same towers.  One could even place a fiber-optic trunk line on the same towers if one chose to use the same right of way, thereby minimizing environmental disruptions, saving on installation costs, and maximizing revenue for the same land footprint.

      •  Right. IIRC there was a proposal in NJ (0+ / 0-)

to add a nat gas pipeline to a AC right of way.
