  •  Yes it goes back much further than Obama (3+ / 0-)

    by a few decades. During the Reagan years is when I first heard people discussing how bad liberals were and  the name gradually became tarnished since.  

    Republican think tanks were formed even before Reagan but grew  as well as placing Republicans in key positions in the media and other places in society.

    This has been going on for a long time and the term, liberal, took on a bad connotation long before Obama even considered running for President.  

    The 80s into the 90s , we started hearing this a great deal and it grew.

      A lot of people are writing comments to the effect of "Don't worry about the labels, we win on policy!"

      That's exactly wrong.  We need to talk about labels and images, not just white papers, or "that's liberal" will remain an effective way to turn the public against politicians who support their policies.
