The Russians had already defeated the German armies on the Eastern front and they had been routed in North Africa by the time the US Army reached Britain in any numbers and before D Day. The only effect was one of shortening the war in Europe.

War games involving the actual Operation Sealion plans and many of the officers on both sides after the war demonstrated that any invasion of Britain would have been held at the first or second Line of Control, i.e. a few tens of miles from the coast. After that, attacks on the supply lines in the Channel would have finished the job.

The reason for that defeat was probably down to one incident - the accidental bombing of London when the pilots mis-navigated. That led to a retaliation attack on Berlin which caused Hitler to redirect all bombing from strikes on the airfields to the cities. That left the RAF time to recover - and put those foreign pilots I mentioned into action.

I suggest you look a little beyond the Hollywood view of history. One Erol Flynn film was banned in the UK just after the war because the gross inaccuracies (no Americans in Burma and parachutes were not used at all) that there were riots in the cinemas that showed it.
The 2000 movie U- 571 was described by Prime Minister Blair as "an affront" to British sailors. It shows how the Americans helped win the war by capturing an Engima cypher machine from a U-boat. It is a fantastical dramatization of an actual event - the first capture of a naval enigma machine by the British ship HMS Bulldog on May 9 1941, seven months before the USA entered the war. Other versions of Enigma machine code were available to the British in 1939 from the Poles who captured one a decade before that. Other historical howlers are listed in the link.

"The Allied casualties figures for D-Day have generally been estimated at 10,000, including 2500 dead. Broken down by nationality, the usual D-Day casualty figures are approximately 2700 British, 946 Canadians, and 6603 Americans."

are that the British designed a whole series of mine clearing and other devices for securing routes off the beaches quickly, which the US generals dismissed as gimmicks while relying heavily on mechanised armour that got swamped and stuck on sandbars off Omaha Beach. .

Utah beach was taken comparatively easily, actually helped by the US forces landing 1000 yards off their original landing site. This compared to Omaha:

But the situation was very different only a few miles further east on Omaha beach. Here the first elements of the US 29th Division and the 1st Division ran into stiff opposition. Without armour support - most of the DD 'swimming' tanks had foundered in the heavy swell - the infantry was cut down by heavy German fire.

Very soon an immense traffic jam of landing craft and amphibious vehicles built up about 1,000 yards offshore. By 09.00 the beach was packed with thousands of dead and wounded men, while hundreds of bodies floated in the blood-red surf.

The landing on Omaha was nearly abandoned but the message requesting permission was delayed.

BTW, the  success of the landings would not have been possible without the Mulberry harbors and PLUTO that supplied the invasion with fuel.  Mulberry meant that, unlike the Operation Sealion plans, it was not necessary to capture a port intact at an early stage to provide means of getting men and materiel on shore easily.
