  •  Boehner is just playing this beautifully... (14+ / 0-)

He can whip the votes if he wants to. This bill is not fundamentally different from his own bill. He just wants to release some of his freshmen members to vote against it to avoid primary challenges. Some, not all. Definitely not Allen West who wil likely be defeated by a Democrat anyway.

Why not force Democrats to deliver the votes? Get President Obama to whip the votes for Boehner's bill?

The guys on Wall Street own both parties so they dont care how the vote looks.

I've been praising Boehner since the Tax Cut deal and I think he will come out of this process even stronger than he was before. He's been dominating the agenda in Washington all year and late in the negotiations effectively marginalized the President. Obama was out talking fuel economy while he was in there getting a superb deal.

I don't think I can recall a Speaker who has so successfully forced his will since Tip O Neal.

    •  Not so fast Rush Limbaugh their true leader (5+ / 0-)

      •  Of course. All the right wingers will hate it. (6+ / 0-)

That's the point I made in my "conservative cave" diary. When the rubber meets the road, they are going to look out for their corporate benefactors.

Rush Limbaugh can hate it. he's got different interests. But if you look at who is going to sabotage the economy to prevent obama's reelection while simultaneously protecting corporate fundraising...he's done a fantastic job.

He threaded the needle. I think he's going to get a big boost from the Republican establishment after this is all over.

        •  Of course all the LEFT WINGERS DO HATE IT!!! (0+ / 0-)

It has been proven, time after time, austerity does not work.

Tanking the economy to save the credit rating is a bad idea!!!

Running his fat fucking mouth since Uploaded by EIBNetRocks on Jun 9, 2009:

Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) outlined the GOP’s debt-ceiling plan to conservative commentator Rush Limbaugh on Monday before showing it to his conference.

On Monday during his radio program, Limbaugh talked about the call he received from Boehner. Limbaugh’s support of the plan would be advantageous to Republicans because it might help rally the conservative base.

The conservative radio host said Boehner outlined his two-step plan that includes $1.2 trillion in spending cuts and a $1 trillion hike in the debt ceiling. In the second step, a commission would be appointed to come back with additional deficit-reduction proposals, which the Congress could then vote on.

Limbaugh said Boehner told him he was working on the plan with Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) and Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.). He also said President Obama was irritated at being left out.

“Boehner told Obama that, Obama got aggravated even more that he’s been left out of that,” Limbaugh said.

In a nod to the conservative anger over the fall-back proposal McConnell had put forward earlier in the month, Limbaugh said: ”I’m told that Senator McConnell has been in a better position than he has been lately … he’s on the same page with Boehner now.”

In some sense it makes sense for Boehner to reach out to Limbaugh in this manner. The man has a huge audience of politically engaged conservatives and, if you want to keep the base on your side, it’s not a bad strategy to have the guy they listen to on your side. Additionally, Boehner’s plan was being made public while Limbaugh’s show was on the air yesterday and there’s a certainly PR advantage to having Limbaugh rally the base behind you while you’re rallying the caucus behind you.

      •  Would only work (2+ / 0-)

if the Dems do his work and get it passed despite the main body of people responsible for it's crappiest features.  Then teahadists walk away getting a decent deal, Dems left holding the bog of "goodies" they didn't want.

Not sure how this discourages the same actions for the next issue that rises.  What will that be?  Are we in need of another unemployment extension?

And this time, not only will we give away the farm, we'll throw in the next-door neighbors farm and the first-born child of every family in town.

    •  as I said the other day (0+ / 0-)

      this is pragmatism.

Ugly, ruthless pragmatism, but results-oriented pragmatism nonetheless.
