    i'm on an ipad, so its hard to write anything substantial, but orientalism is one of those foundational books for the social sciences.  I swear half the recent work is derived from it, even when it isn't credited.  At some level its my only fault with it...the book is so damn good that everyone is now using it for damn near everything--even when it may not be the best perspective.

    Marshall Sahlins has suggested that anthropology tends to take any good idea and apply it so much that it becomes boring.  I think orientalism is having exactly that problem.

    PS i never knew you were an archaeologist.  There really are a ton of us here.
