Why do so many company boards seem to have such a fetishistic need to maximize short term profit?

Very few companies ever try to maximize profits in a single quarter, or even a single year. To do so would mean no investment in R&D, not replacing worn out equipment, and shaving every possible expense item that hits the current bottom line. However, I do agree that company boards and management are much too focused on quarterly results and meeting Wall Street's expectations. There is a way to manage that process by explaining to Wall Street that you have longer term goals and that quarters may be less predictable. Few seem to have the courage to make that a policy.
