Who the heck is going to be Augustus?  Maybe nobody.

People forget that Caesar was a relief at the time.  The government was that broken.

Read pp. 1-7 of Krugman's _The Great Unraveling_ (available from Google Books). NOW.

When he was done wreaking havoc, he retired to a cabbage farm and nobody dared say boo to him-- just as the feckless cowards in DC don't dare say boo to him today.

Yeah, Augustus came in at the tail end of a century or so of civil war. The Senate's naming of Julius as dictator perpetuus had been a tacit admission that the Republic was by then in a state of permanent emergency (the normal office, dictator ad rem publicam restituendam "special executive for the purpose of restoring the state" had a term of 6 months).

Permanent emergency, for that matter, is pretty much where we are now, thanks to the "continuous surrender" policy of Obama towards the Republican Party.

grieving citizen of the murdered Republic, unrepentant rebel against the Empire.
