    those small states simply aren't a lucrative target for the corporatocracy to spend great sums trying to manipulate their politics, although, it would be nice to think that the local people simply are resistant to such things.

      Buying a small state senator is much cheaper than a big state-and Bernie's vote counts just as much as one from CA or Texas.  Much of our problems in this country can be traced to the conservatism of the senators from the small, rural states in the middle.

        The states with lots of wide-open spaces tend to be heavily urban in population. But the rest of your statement is true and has been demonstrated with numbers by Nate Silver, for example, in at least one story I remember from his former FiveThirtyEight.com blog.
