someone mentioned above, what sometimes works is to really work out what the kernel of their meaning is, and respond to that. For myself I'll attempt up to three civil responses to folks who aren't being civil and then drop it if they haven't begun to change their approach. There's also the old recourse of a community without police power, ostracism. The silent treatment can sometimes get through to people.

Is it true? Is it kind? Is it necessary? . . . and respect the dignity of every human being.

    •  I try to be civil to new members (0+ / 0-)

whom I haven't yet decided are trolls, but who are behaving in questionable and troll-like ways, to give them the benefit of the doubt. But if they prove to be the trolls, that I suspected them to be, they get treated like trolls.

One of the things I hate most here is having to deal with new members who, naively or not, put out the same tired old tropes that have been repeatedly and convincingly shot down. It's hard to tell if they're sincere and well-meaning, if mistaken, new users, or trolls, or even zombies. I can't stand it when I sense that someone's trying to mess with my head and put one over me.
