And I respect you for your emotional equanimity.

Not everybody is as strong as you, to shrug off what people say to them.  I wish I could be.

And I can shrug off a lot of what people say, but the risk becomes greater the more I have made myself vulnerable in what I've said.  And I also feel like it makes a difference if the rest of society is also saying you're wrong or bad or lesser because of who you are -- jerks on the internet in such cases are poking at a spot that's already been poked hundreds of times.

So if I say like Billy Bragg, and somebody says, "He sucks!  And you suck!", I think they're being pointlessly jerky, but I lose no sleep over it.

On the other hand if I talk about the ways in which politics and political discourse affect me where I am most vulnerable -- and somebody comes along and tells me my perspective is wrong and worthless and fraudulent -- then that's just what I've been told all along, everywhere.

Moreover, it can seem like nobody's learning anything.  The people who are already compassionate to my point of view don't need to hear from me, and the people who aren't cannot hear me.

So what's the point of taking that emotional risk?  Which was my point.

Not everyone has the emotional hide of the former Marine sergeant and retired construction foreman that I do.
I'm genuinely sorry that you feel like you have to allow the snide keyboard warriors to control your feelings, but I know that many people do.
They've taken your sense of self-worth hostage no less than the Tea Party has been taking the nation's well being hostage.
But if they have, they have, and I must respect your need for self-preservation.

I'd more say, I'd be handing them a weapon I know would hurt if I spoke up... so why hand it to them?

And really, it does me little harm to not speak here.  This is just one of many forums I have to speak my truth, online and off.

But if there are dozens or hundreds of people like me, just writing off Daily Kos as a place to talk about certain personal politics, then the site has lost.
