Nearly every major oil company reported year-to-year oil-and-gas output declines, often in the double-digits.

It is going to get progressively harder to extract oil from fields that have been produced to 50-60% of original capacity. After that point it becomes much harder to extract, even though there is still oil there. The easy stuff is long gone.

And that means the rat bastards will go into even more extreme environments (see: Deepwater Horizon, Atlantis, ANWR) to feed their voracious greed.

It's all about the money. They make it, we - and the Earth - suffer. Irreparably.

Du er ikke å ødelegge vårt demokrati og vårt arbeid for en bedre verden. (You're not destroying our democracy and our work for a better world.) --- Norway Prime Minister Jens Stoltenberg

WE  are our own worst enemy.  Of course, assholes like Inhofe and Barton slow us down from trying to turn the corner.

Doesn't matter much in the near term----we're headed for a huge crash anyway. It would be nice if something positive could come out of all that..........

(I will now climb down from my soapbox)

      our greed ..

1 in 7 jobs in Germany depends directly on the automobile industry. Which is an industry producing things that burn oil.

my job (if I dont lose it anyhow) depends on it just as well - as I am supposed to do research for a steel company which makes the largest part of its money producing the steel that goes into all these cars.

making that steel uses coal (coke) which we get free on board without asking how it´s mined either.

it is very hard to escape that devilish cycle of fossil fuel based production and consumption of which the Deepwater Horizon is the beginning but by no means the end.

All in all ecocide is the main product of our economies, and the main activity of our lives. (And this is something that wasnt always so, it isnt a necessary feature of human existence - we have opted to make it so).

Do we want to stop it? What will we do to do so? If our life means death for much of the planet how can we justify that life?

nascendo em cima da terra nessa terra há de viver
vivendo na terra que essa terra há de comer
      tudo que vive nessa terra
      pra essa terra é alimento
born on this earth, this earth that is there to live on
living on this earth, so that this earth has something to eat
everything that lives on this earth
      is food for this earth

One could simply refuse to eat. In six weeks, one would turn into food for the worms. That´s the old way, the way it was before we turned into this pest.
