in the next Pootie diary--pootie folks always kick in.

Congratulations on this project, it seems like a lot of fun and very worthwhile. Sorry I can't donate now, but I do support our local food bank.

We live in a rural area, and during the summer and fall gardeners and growers often drop off extra produce at the food bank. I was proud last year to give a few extra pounds of garlic that I grew myself, which they were delighted to get. Also my crazy mother-in-law sends us a big box of quality herbs, spices, peppers, etc. for every birthday and holiday. I don't know if she's forgetful or just trying to be annoying. Anyway, I already have all the spices I need so I just truck them over to the food bank. Then I thank her and tell her how delighted we were to get them, so she continues to send them--our food bank now has better quality spices than most!

A tip for people who already have enough--we have been doing this for several years. Ask relatives to restrict their holiday gifts to A) charitable giving and/or B) food items. If they send you a box of exotic pears for Christmas, you can take them to the food bank after the holiday when they will be much appreciated. In my immediate family, I send a donation card for one charity in their name, and they send me a card from some other charity in my name. Everybody seems happy with this.

    Good luck with your project!
