I was probobly being unfair with the last part of my comment and I apologize. It has been a rough week.

I agree that he should have handled the negotiations differently. I just disagree that it would have made a difference one way or another as far as the downgrade. If he did everything you suggested, it would still translate into the idea that the political process is just plain broken. And with good reason, because it most certainly is.

And to be honest, I don't see any way he could have won this. If he took a hard line against the republicans and refused to compromise, as many of us would have liked, it would have just made them that much more recalcitrant, and in the meantime the media would have portrayed him as being a partisan and an extremist. If he had invoked the 14th, it would have caused a constitutional crisis. I just think it was a lose-lose situation right from the get go. Harry Reid made a horrible miscalculation by not raising the ceiling when he had the majority, and Obama gave away his biggest bargaining chip-the Bush tax cut extension-in December.  That made the kabuki theater culminating with a crappy deal and a downgrade pretty much a foregone conclusion..

    Will die for oil
Will kill for power and to us the spoils
The billionaires get to pay less tax
The working poor get to fall through the cracks
