I would have guessed sugar and its metabolic evil siblings, corn syrup and HFCS.

Because those do raise blood sugar, which raise insulin, which lowers blood sugar, which causes another sugar craving to follow on the last.  Over the long term, this can lead to insulin resistance, which plays merry havoc with the endocrine system even before it causes prediabetes and then diabetes.

I hate seeing the heart-healthy symbol or comments about reduced cancer risk on low-fat, high sugar foods.  And I think such foods are counterproductive.  If you're going to have a sugary dessert, at least fat helps slow the absorption of sugar into the bloodstream, and blunts the insulin spike.

(Disclaimer: I have no medical or dietician background.  I just read.)

turns into sugar in the body.
I try to listen to my body. If I eat carbs - a sandwich, toast, potato or sweets I will have an insulin downer about an hour later. Nap time! And I am not pre-diabetic - borderline, but not in the danger zone. I can eat bacon and eggs without any insulin surge or decrease. And I have read and believe that carbs are the problem, not fats at all......
