  •  I rode a bicycle to work, years ago. (6+ / 0-)

The only problem with it, besides it taking longer, is the possibility of rain.  If the travel is any substantial distance, and you get rained on, you can be a sponge by the time you get to work.  I never understood how people can bear that when cars and taxis are available.

My feral cat is sitting in my lap as I type, making weird noises.  The window is open so she can leap out when she gets fed up.

    •  Fenders and decent raingear always worked for me. (6+ / 0-)

My biggest gripes were always bad drivers and broken glass.

I didn't feel safe riding to work in hard rain.  For one thing, the gutters fill up with water and every bicycle I have ever ridden becomes unreliable when going through foot deep water.  Combine that with the fact that those flooded gutters usually occur at a busy intersection with cars making lefts and rights in heavy rain and poor visibility....  Bad situation.

I understand, people must deal with it somehow, because that's how millions of people live, but I just never got it.

.....the rain, I just end pedaling like mad to the intended destination, fortunately usually home.

        grit into #50 sandpaper.

        say goodbye to your chain
        your brake pads
        your rims

wears them out much faster than normal.

also you get more flats in the rain. the water acts as a lubricant and everything with an edge starts cutting your tires.  now you have holes in your tires and pretty soon your getting one flat after another.

other than that, I love riding in the rain.  I feel kind of crazy and maniacal - in a good way :-)

.....it pours like mad in the middle of the day, after a nice morning start.  On more than one occasion, I biked in, only to watch it pour mid-day on my vehicle.
