    That's why the Founders made the House of Representatives the only part of the federal government that was directly elected by popular vote. And why the vast majority of them supported restrictions on the franchise.

    Which is not to such restrictions, or the Electoral College, or the pre-17th Amendment indirect election of the Senate were good things. They weren't.

    But the Founding Fathers were profoundly aware of the dangers involved with an uniformed citizenry.  Read John Adams letters if you doubt this.
