  •  Don't you think (0+ / 0-)

there's enough video evidence to the contrary to blow that out of the water, though? Once people start paying attention? And honestly, he's too reminiscent of Bush. I can't imagine people welcoming that.

There's a reason Democrats won massively the last two cycles, and it wasn't because people were desperate for "bipartisanship". --kos

      ...to his past, either.

Also: do you really think Bush is so toxic anymore?   Our current President made a point of moving on, rather than reckoning with the crimes of those years.

I have no doubt that hardcore Democratic voters hate Bush.  And most hardcore Republican voters revere him (other than those who see him as a profligate spender...but surely Perry won't strike the Teabaggers as that!).

But the people in the middle?  I'm not so sure any more.

Yes, there are bad memories of those years that could be exploited politically. If Obama wanted to use Bush the way that the GOP used Jimmy Carter for two decades, Obama could do so (after all, the raw material is much more damning).

But Obama clearly has less than no interest in that kind of politics.

Perry's resemblance to Bush will infuriate Democrats, which will in turn excite Republicans.

The swing voters in the middle will be paying attention to the economy. If it sucks, they'll vote for the Republican, whoever it is.

"[S]ince Obama keeps talking nonsense about economics, at what point do we stop giving him credit for actually knowing better? Maybe at some point we have to accept that he believes what he’s saying." --Paul Krugman

      •  You could be right. (0+ / 0-)

More often than not, when Bush is brought up, I hear groans across the board. That is just observation, though, so is worth about.... I just don't see moderates, independents, etc getting on the Perry bandwagon, though. Who knows, though, as things progress. As Laurie Anderson said, "What I really want to know is: Are things getting better, or are they getting worse?"
