  •  Wow! I had that thought about public schools! (3+ / 0-)

I have been thinking about that for years regarding public schools.

If the federal government could fund a program for schools to install solar panels, the schools could save on electricity and this could lead to less need to increase property taxes.

If they produced extra electricity, such as in the summer or when school is not in session, this could be sold to the electric company.

It would have so many benefits...less dependence on oil, less pollution, paying for itself...

but that additional power could be sold of course and then the schools could pay back the Federal government and the money could be invested in another project.

Maybe to minimize the initial outlay, it could be a rolling program.

In other words, first we found the poorest school districts in the country. Then, one half of the money saved or earned from selling extra power gets reinvested in the school and the other half goes into a fund to support the next round of solar installations!

        I love this idea. :)
