  •  Scott Kleeb ran against him (5+ / 0-)

He was a good candidate - a Nebraska rancher, smart and effective campaigner, and raised a fair amount of money and ran a decent campaign.

Kleeb's campaign was a good example of 50 state strategy candidacy. But even in a strong Democratic year like 2008, in a strongly Republican state like Nebraska, it wasn't enough. Johanns was the favourite from day one -- as a former Governor and former US Secretary of Agriculture, he had a high profile and good reputation, and there was never much of a chance of anyone other than Johanns taking Chuck Hagel's seat...

Once social change begins,it cannot be reversed. You cannot uneducate the person who has learned to read...You cannot oppress people who are not afraid anymore.

Number 1 is Football (Huskers), and number 2 is being viewed as a old fashioned conservative state. Odd since we are historically a progressive state. We even voted for Obama in the 2nd district which includes Omaha. But after 9/11 it was all about God, Country and Bush, and the ocasional hiccup be damned.
Kleeb was an awesome canidate, but if our FOOTBALL COACH GOD (or so he is worshiped as) Tom Osborn cannot win governor for refusing to endorse the secretly racist school district setup in Omaha, then Kleeb had no chance. I respect him for trying and maybe he changed some minds, which we need more of.
