throw out billions of pounds of edible food every year

Filmmaker Jeremy Seifert directed the multi-award winning documentary, DIVE!, about the more than 95 billion pounds of edible food ending up in America's landfills each year.

After realizing his own local area grocery stores, mainly Whole Foods and Trader Joe's, were regularly pitching perfectly edible food in their dumpsters, he set out to see if he could feed his family with this reclaimed food and document it for a film project. What he found was not only could he feed his family, but there was enough food to feed the millions of hungry people in Los Angeles county, and millions more around the country.

In DIVE! Seifert makes repeated attempts to help Trader Joe's and Whole Foods adopt a policy that prevents food from ending up in their dumpsters and instead allocated to area food banks, homeless shelters and soup kitchens. To date, neither organization has made any commitment and both continue to throw away millions of pounds of food; a costly expense for taxpayers and the environment, all while homeless, veterans, children and millions of unemployed go hungry.

    •  That's capitalism (5+ / 0-)

If they give food to people for free, even if they were going to throw it out anyway, that could mean less customers to private enterprise.

After all, those hungry people have to shop somewhere, even if its with food stamps.

"Thou shalt not give anything away for free" is the capitalist maxim.

See this is what I don't understand in this country, if there were no foodstamps, social security, medicare, universal education, .. shall I go on--we would be living in a communist country, and there would be a revolution. True capitalists know this and support taxes on the wealthy, universal health care, etc... so that everyone is not too poor to cause a revolution en masse. Capitalism with no restraints always leads to this--complete social collapse and a move toward communist rule. It just surprises me that the very people who say they love the capitalist system most are the very ones who are destroying it from within.

It's done every few seconds in this country~!

Restaurants, buffets, etc, etc all over this country throw food away by the TONS~!

I've asked more than one of them WHY they do that...the answer comes back to me...
      "It's the law. Health Department".

...with food samps cards all the time (I don't live in a poor neighborhood BTW).

So WHY NOT more food stamps?

Oh! I forgot that food stamps are at an all time high.  Obama is the "food stamps" president according to Repugs.

Sure TJs and WF could do better, probably every single restaurant and supermarket chain.

But we as a society are truly screwed up because of the increasing gap between the rich and poor.; an oasis of truth. Truth that leads to action -1.75 -7.23
