    Unfortunately, FDR probably could have done more but chose not to. He was personally a racist, as well and was fond of telling racist jokes and stories. The New Deal was some of the best economic legislation this country has ever seen. Democrats of today would do well to emulate it. But that doesn't change the fact that FDR held inexcusable views on race. I think that's why Eleanor Roosevelt was so strongly for racial equality.
