    The reason they dropped it is that discoveries of objects beyond its orbit indicate there may be hundreds or thousands of others very similar to it, and none of them really "fit in" with the motions and influence of planets.  So it was a choice between confusing the issue one way, by drawing a hard line and dropping what people had been taught was a planet, or confusing it a worse way by saying that anything spherical in any orbit and any orbital environment is a planet.
