    it's not the starting but the stopping that gets you. The Sun is pulling your probe straight in and getting the correct balance to orbit or land on Mercury requires substantial energy input.

    In addition, there's the desire to end up in a polar orbit so you don't crispify your probe going between Mercury and the Sun and so you can examine the polar regions, which are the most interesting. This takes another energy input.
