  •  If Obama truly thought that the GOP might default (1+ / 0-)

and was terrified of it and did not even publicly threaten to use a combination of the 14th Amendment and coining platinum as a trump card then this was an extraordinary instance of political malpractice.  He and his are just not that clumsy.  I continue to think that he got what he wanted -- Catfood Commission 2 -- and that Dionne is being spun here to a shameful degree.

    •  To be very, very generous to the pres (0+ / 0-)

it's not at all impossible his objective was to avoid both default and downgrade, and that he saw the extraordinary measures you mention as capable, perhaps, of achieving the first but unlikely to achieve the second.

He is a risk averse guy, as Dionne points out, so he was willing to bend in the effort to accomplish both objectives.

In the end, of course, he couldn't avoid downgrade.  If he had recognized that at the outset, maybe he would have taken a more aggressive approach throughout the negotiations.  And maybe he wouldn't find himself in the severe pickle he's in now...

      •  These measures should have *prevented* a downgrade (0+ / 0-)

S&P was right to note that the path he took could not prevent future hostage-taking of the debt-ceiling.  Had Obama taken this path, then the debt ceiling could never be held hostage again.  S&P's reasoning for the downgrade then fizzles.
