  •  "punish" doesn't mean what you think it means (0+ / 0-)

    Forcing people to do their duty is harsh, but it is not punishment, because they've done nothing wrong.  Just like jury duty isn't punishment for registering to vote.  

    Be wary of extending the meaning of "punishment" from "dissuasive consequences of immoral or dangerous behavior" to mean "something that inconveniences me as a result of something that benefits me".

    Doing so feeds directly into conservative memes of self-centered division and hierarchy that pit us against each other.  It is a dangerous result of a society of narcissists, and it betrays an oversized sense of entitlement.  

    Paying taxes sucks, but we gotta do it, no matter how much we whine.  All the whining from the right made us forget one simple guideline:  The more you get out of society, the more you put back in.  That simple guideline has been tossed out the window by conservatives, and progressives want to bring it back.

    Pas de bras, pas de chocolat!
