    it is the collapsing empires of the Brits and France that led to large immigration to mother countries. At that point, the white character of these was threatened as these communities became large enough to become distinct communities that were extremely exploited both economically, politically and socially. Colonialism had already laid the basis for racism as racism was used to historically justify it. Now that people of colour were living in mother countries, racists were able to play divide and conquer with the indigenous working class.  Racism has always been a card in the UK, look at how the Irish (both as a colony and Irish workers in england and scotland) have been treated historically.
