    Jewish character of the state.

    •  I really don't think that the occupation, (4+ / 0-)

maintained indefinitely, is compatible with democracy - whether the Israeli state is Jewish or not.

To be honest, I also hope this is not a question we ever get a definitive answer to, either.

    •  For it to "maintain the occupation" (2+ / 0-)

and stay a democracy, it would have to become a secular state with full political rights for the Palestinians.

Under those circumstances, I don't think you could meaningfully talk about an "occupation" anymore.

So, thanks for the suggestion, but I'll stick with only two options -- democratic or Jewish.

      •  I think we're saying the same thing (0+ / 0-)

Israel can do any two of the there, but not all three:

        1) Jewish
        2) Democratic
        3) Control the land outside of the '67 borders

        •  Yeah, but you'd still have the problem (0+ / 0-)

of discrimination against the displaced refugees from 1948.

Until Israel provides meaningful compensation to them, it would be hard to characterize it as a true democracy.

And behind that, of course, is the broader citizenship question.
