  •  it been done and is being done, thanks (6+ / 0-)

AI has said he's the USA's only political prisoner among other things. Millions of people around the globe have signed his AI petitions and people like Nelson Mandela have sought his release. But the FBI wants their revenge and Leonards is paying the price.

America could have chosen to be the worlds doctor, or grocer. We choose instead to be her policeman. pity

but have difficulties to believe that revenge is a big enough motivator to hold him locked up against the backdrop of the international community's protest and being aware (at least a little bit) of his case.

The FBI  staged a public demonstration against his release, when they thought Bill Clinton might give him clemency.

Then Clinton didn't do it. There must be a more serious, deeply unsettling motivation behind it, I would think.

We ave other political prisoners now, some of them not yet tried (eg Bradley Manning) and some who can never be tried because we tortured them into incompetency to stand trial.

It should be shocking how far this country has backslid, and how fast.

        If it's
        Not your body
        Then it's
        Not your choice
        AND it's
        None of your damn business!

      •  revenge is the only motivation I see (0+ / 0-)

I know it's difficult for many Americans to believe but the recent demonstration by the FBI at Peltiers parole hearing last year is compelling proof.

But I guess you could also see their desire to teach Indian people a harsh lesson not to stand up for their rights as a motivation too. Peltier is a symbol both to my people and to the government(FBI). He is suffering the consequences of being that symbol.

    •  That's an out-of-date statement by Amnesty (0+ / 0-)

Probably a pre-Bush statement.  The US has multiple political prisoners now -- Don Siegelman comes to mind.

Read pp. 1-7 of Krugman's _The Great Unraveling_ (available from Google Books). NOW.

      •  you're right it's an decades old statement (0+ / 0-)

Also AI has certain criteria which lets the USA get by since they charge most political prisoners with crimes which they claim are not political.
