    should have been a clue.

    •  It's interesting to watch the GOP reaction (0+ / 0-)

to black leaders in the party.  Reminds me of the reaction of my Eastern European immigrant stepfather to black people at his work back in the 70's and 80's - friendly up front, but suspicious and fearful of them and determined not to let them get ahead of him.  Definitely us versus them mentality.

You see this all the time in the way the GOP deals with Cain and Steele etc. Steele can be RNC chairman as long as folks like Rove are setting up the big secret PACs and calling the shots.  With Herbert Cain, it's all "Hail Fellow Well Met" on the campaign trail, but the white GOP base and the white oligarchy at the top of the party are not going to entertain his candidacy seriously.

The difference is Clarence Thomas who seems to be a thoroughly damaged individual who has internalized to a great extent all the punitive anger that a good portion (majority?) of white america feels toward blacks.  Thomas, for his own history of trauma, seems more than willing to enforce this punitive vision.  But I do think that some conservatives at the top do treat Thomas a little differently, less as a threat and more as a collaborator.

      •  With Thomas, it is all about Scalia, (0+ / 0-)

Scalia says jump and Thomas says how high. Scalia is their hero, and Thomas is just his side kick, kind of like the Lone Ranger and Tonto.
