The message sent in 2010 is that the American electorate WANTS conservative policies.

Otherwise so may conservatives would not have been elected.

I don't care what message you thought you were sending, that's the message that was ACTUALLY sent.

The American People are ANGRY. Teabaggers and conservatives ran on Populism and tapped into that Anger.

Democrats allowed Republicans to run as Populists.

It was pretty amazing that after 30 years of failed conservative policies that sabotaged America that Republicans could just assume the mantle of Populism and blame it all on Democrats.

Democrats let that happen because none of them were pissed off and none of them cared enough to stand up for the American People and our livelihoods.

I don't care what message you thought you were sending, that's the message that was ACTUALLY sent.

That wasn't the message sent, but I'm sure it was the message received, no doubt about that.

The message sent was We are Angry! Fuck YOU and PROTECT US!

the only message that matters, sadly. Even the best of intentions in the message that was tried to sent get lost and end up in an entirely different message recieved.

It's entirely predictable.  I should know, I predicted it.

When we learn how to use elections to make sure the message sent and the message recieved are the same, we'll start making progress.

Sadly, the left seems to want to double down on once again sending a message that will be interpreted in the exact same way as  the  message of the 2010 midterms.

        Bad idea.

        •  The message received has nothing to do with (0+ / 0-)

          the sender.

It is an interpretation, an interpretation that confirms bias.

Those who failed choose to blame it on someone else so they can continue to operate within their comfort zone and in the case of our politics, with corporate sponsorship.

So the message received is that people don't want Progressive policy.

And yet 60-80% of Americans want progressive policy.

A more realistic reading of the message would be that the Populist rhetoric captured the anger and fear of the electorate and leveraged it towards an electoral win.

Republicans can do populism, because it's fake and leaves the corporate sponsors alone.

Democrats can't do that because populism from the Left terrifies the corporate sponsors. Therefore it couldn't have been the populism, it was the fact that nobody wants Lefty policy.
