Look -- this is not a reason to vote Republican, but Democrats in opposition will probably take a harder line against changes to Social Security than Democrats led by Obama in the White House. We have some evidence for this from the Bush years on the one hand and on the other the noise that came out of our side during the debt ceiling debacle (affirmative if unenthusiastic grunts in favor of a "grand bargain").

Again, not a reason to vote R in 2012, but, yeah, if anyone is going to force through changes to the safety net, and drag some Democrats along, it will be a Democratic President who has a mind to. Only Nixon could go to China.

And this one clearly has a mind to. In his subtle way, he brings it over and over and over and over, and has since the start (Catfood I).

What do we want? Compromise! When do we want it? Now!
