in my own defense, but it does offer a very intuitively satisfying explanation for how Obama the President being largely neoliberal in policies doesn't necessarily mean that Obama the individual is a neoliberal. At any rate, I'm wholly sympathetic to your arguments (in fact, they've been my own arguments at various points on this site, especially after the Westen piece came out in the NYTimes). But at this point I am of the mind that giving him all that agency vastly underestimates the power of the neoliberal project. His appointments mostly required Senate confirmation, etc. etc. I'm not really up for a full on policy review, but suffice it to say that I understand your frustration. AND I disagree with you. I think Obama is different than what he does as the POTUS.

I don't know half of you half as well as I should like, and I like less than half of you half as well as you deserve. ||@totushek on twitter

it doesn't matter one whit what Obama is in his heart. what matters is what he does. that is the only metric we have by which to determine what he is and where he stands.

you want to forgive the man, then by all means, forgive the man, but don't extend that forgiveness to the President. don't let that forgiveness affect you in regard to rationalizing your decision to vote for him again when he has a history of espousing and implementing rightwing neoliberal policy. if you do that then you become a neoliberal voter in the same way that voting for a rightwing candidate makes one a rightwing voter regardless of how leftist your personal ideology is.

and make no mistake about it, neoliberalism is rightwing ideology.

so, maybe it's time for you to choose between claiming to be leftwing and being leftwing.
