  •  The Hershey plant in Oakley, CA closed a bit over (7+ / 0-)

a year ago and sent all its jobs to Mexico. It used to be a good employer in this central valley town, and many bay area folks visited on the way to Yosemite. No more.

    •  True that. We drove past it a couple of months ago (3+ / 0-)

Another company is in there (I do not remember the name) but the operation seems to be much smaller than when Hershey was running it.

to Oakdale about 3 years ago now.

I remember the Hersey plant from the late 60s and early 70s. Every school and Girl Scout troop toured the plant at least once a year. They slowed the tours way down in the 80s and 90s and totally stopped them (national security was the claim) after 9/11.

We don't buy processed food from Mexico. There was a program about the mexican candy with lead in it a couple of years ago so we don't take the chance. (This would inclued campbells soup made in mexico)

    •  Can anyone defend the J-1 visa program at a (3+ / 0-)

time when the US unemployment rate is as high as it is? According to the article on this Hershey story I read in the WaPo, we're giving 100,000 jobs to foreign students. How is that any different from corporations' outsourcing? Seems a no brainer to susepnd the program until we get our unemployment rate down.

From what I've read, the whole program needs an overhaul/enima anyway. Between US employers who abuse and take advantage of student works and some student workers who are somehow surprised to find out they actually have to, you know, work, it sounds like a pretty messed up program.

Ds see human suffering and wonder what they can do to relieve it. Rs see human suffering and wonder how they can profit from it.
