Most of the 1,000 workers were "laid off" through attrition and early retirement (my mother being one of them).  Essentially they offered early retirement.  My mother gets 90% of her original expected pension, so it wasn't a bad deal for most of the works.

The problem is though, that when they retired, the jobs they held were eliminated, providing no further employment for the next generation.

As far as the waxy feel/flavor...yes Hershey has changed their recipe.  They are no longer using as much Cocoa butter.

I had a great summer job at Hershey Park when I was young - it was so long ago, it was before Chocolate World appeared. Factory tours were still on the agenda with a free bar to be had at the terminus of Milton Snavely's enterprise.
We entertainers met lots of the employees because we "toured" frequently for that candy bar. They loved their jobs, some had been there more than 25 years and they felt like "family" at the company.
As I said, it was along time ago. This shatters some long held notions for me.
