    a very sweet deal, where publishers took almost all of the risks.

    Borders, though, has made a lot of dumb decisions stretching back to the late 90s. They have been doomed for quite some time. New pressures will most likely kill off or radically alter surviving bookstores in the years to come. Certainly, there is no reason to rush out of the bunker to Barnes & Nobles just to own Palin's latest pile of flaming crap in hardcover form. There is very little in a bookstore that can't be easily downloaded except for the trinkets and trash near the checkout.
