if you oppose this project and tar sands oil importation you are effectively supporting importation of MIddle East oil

We have plenty of options, and they're being more and more widely used. The Army and Navy have been using solar for at least a year, and the Navy and Air Force are field-testing alternative fuels. In July, commercial airlines finally got permission to use biomass fuels. Corporations involved in transportation have about a million vehicles on the road testing alternative fuels right now, and the the "Green Fleet Partnership" was only formed in April.

Make no mistake. Alternative energies are being fast-tracked after being ignored for decades. The field-testing will shake out what works when and where. This research will lead to standardization, mass production, and lower costs.

The last thing we need is to have more transnational corporations control any part of the planet, much less under the cover of "security of supply." I've heard that argument since the '70s, and there is NO security in letting the planet be raped for profit. There is ample evidence of the damage they've done.

REAL security lies in renewables, and that's the direction we're going.

    •  For the time being it most certainly is either/or (0+ / 0-)

and what renewable technology is ready to replace our motor vehicle fleet in its entirety within the next 20 years? Folsk are going to go out and buy brand new cars with Lithium batteries or flex fuel capability (which has its own carbon produciton issues)?

Full speed ahead with alternatives but also with freedom from Mid-East oil and all the horrible things & expenses that entails.

will cover all circumstances, don't you see? That's why so many different varieties are being tested.

Different renewable technologies are successful in different parts of the country ... the world. They may well work the best in combination with one another. Sun, wind, water, personal, commercial, distributed, remote ... and lots of other stuff, too. They are being built right now all over the world. They're being mass produced, standardized, and thus falling in cost. BigEnergy will change or die, and these new pipelines may be their last gasps.

Why on earth would anyone want to transport dirty fuel around the world? To get money, that's why! No transnational corporation owns the sun or the wind. They want our monthly payments ;) If they want to keep getting those payments, they'd bigger build big solar plants in sunny climes, as GE and Google are.

THe US led the world in 2008 with 8,300 MW of installed wind for the year, China second at 6,300Mw. IIRC.

With large scale HVDC offshore projects finally getting started here on the east coast.... 2013...., its quite exciting.

SLated to start construction next year

        •  Yes I see many years before what you & I both (0+ / 0-)

want to happen happens.  In the meantime?

The wholsesale rpelacement of US motor vehicle fleet iwll take decades even if the perfect solution were available today.  Folks cannot go out any buy new cars en masse.
